Two years ago there were four Laclede Gas gasometers left in St. Louis. I was saddened to see the gasometer in Forest Park Southeast torn down a couple years back, but at least there was still one of these monstrosities in North City near Goodfellow and two more next to I-44 in Shrewsbury. Until now.

It seems that the two Shrewsbury gasometers will now meet the same fate as the FPSE. There is no doubt that the current structures are ugly with being untended for so many years, but I have found them memorable since before my elementary school days when I used to attend St. Michael’s down the street from the structures. Hopefully something more than grass will find a home on these newly vacated lots. And maybe, just maybe, the Goodfellow gasometer will be able to hold out and avoid the fate of it’s brothers.
